Girlfriend implies a commitment to her and is pretty specific. Lady friend might just be a female friend, or a girl who I'm just sleeping with. And I may use that term because I feel like the exact nature of our relationship is ambiguous. Or because I don't want people to know we're sleeping together.

"Lady friend" is a very antiquated term. Unfortunately, you won't know until you ask him. Yet, if you have to ask, do you really feel as if you're his woman? He could be saying exactly what he means: you're a lady who is a friend. I'd ask him if.

Usually, if I refer to a "lady friend" it means a girl I have or am currently sleeping with. If she is my friend I will call her my friend or use her name. There is no reason to call her my lady friend.
